Summary
Hydrographic data of the near-surface layer (0 to 200 m) are presented, which were measured in a small area within the Bransfield Strait during December 1980 by RV “Meteor” as part of cruise No. 56.
Profiles and two vertical sections show a sharp salinity front (ΔS≈0.3), in a Northeast direction, extending down to a maximum depth of 120 m.
From Θ-S-diagrams two main water masses are obtained. Cold and saline water of the Weddellsea coming from the South, and warmer, less saline water of the Bransfield Strait in the northern part of the front. Comparisons with historical hydrographic stations suggests that this front is a continuous phenomenon, which may be possible the origin of the Weddell-Scotia-Confluence extending out of this area as far as 30°E.
