Additional information

This article is a condensed version of one prepared for the October 1977 meetings of the Atlantic Economic Society. It was written largely in reaction to Crockett [1976] and Pesek [1976]; but even before those articles appeared, Samuel I. Katz had been urging me to write an article amplifying parts of my 1968 article, further reexamining the “New View” of James Tobin and the Yale monetary school, and criticizing Pesek and Saving's conception of banks as firms engaged in producing the product money. I am indebted to Professor Katz for discussions and correspondence.
