Abstract
This special issue of the research section of ETR&D emanates from an idea proposed at the Board and Consulting Editors meeting held at the annual AECT convention in February 1997. The Board enthusiastically endorsed inviting selected national leaders in educational technology research and design to submit manuscripts describing their current work. In subsequent weeks, nominees were solicited by board members. A final listing of eight was approved and invited to participate. A total of six were completed but because of space limitations in any single issue, they will be published in two groupings. Three papers appear in this issue; the remaining three will appear in Volume 47 No. 2.
