What are the specific characteristics of multimedia as a non-linear medium?
How is it possible to integrate different types of information (text, speech, music, graphics and digital movies) on the screen?
What are the relations between text and speech and the relations between sound and pictures (imaging)?
What is the role of interaction, and how can narration be combined with interaction?
What are the roles of (multi)media in different educational settings?
And finally, what are the relations between choice of medium and the didactic goals?
Apparently, it is a long way from the very pragmatic discussions among the providers of skills training and product presentations and theoretical discussions at the university level. Furthermore, in order to enter the general market for learning materials, the commercial pioneers in multimedia production must now begin to conform to the development of standard presentation tools for CD-ROM products, and standardization normally tends to widen the gap between theorists and pragmatists.
However, two other trends may bridge this gap: The theoretical interest at the university level is made concrete via practical activities, both in the training of students at the university in multimedia production, and through realization of the theoretical research in specific practical projects. Furthermore, producers of skills training material realize that the medium needs to develop its own aesthetics if it is to survive the fascination stemming from its mere newness.
