Summary
The protonated reaction products from experiments designed to prepare dimer and tetramer of α-methylstyrene anionically have been examined by thin-layer chromatography, and have been shown to be more complex than previously predicted. The three major constituents of both systems have been separated by preparativelayer chromatography in sufficient quantities to enable structural examination by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. The tetramer dianion has been shown to be in equilibrium with dimer, trimer and small quantities of higher oligomeric dianions.
