Abstract
Seven partially gastrectomized (Billroth II) patients were studied. The following indications of possible postgastrectomy calcium deficiency were found: (1) Increased retention of orally administered47Ca given as CaCl2; (2) low urinary calcium excretion; and (3) decreased bone salt density. The increased retention of Ca was inhibited, when the isotope was given in milk or food. The retention of calcium from milk was the same in gastrectomized and in normal control subjects. The increased retention of47CaCl2 in gastrectomized patients is interpreted as a sign of calcium deficiency. This deficiency might have been caused by malnutrition, and an inability to absorb increased amounts of calcium from food.
