Abstract
Up to 21 gastric “freezing” treatments were given to 11 dogs with gastric fistulas and up to 11 heating treatments were given to 8 dogs in an attempt to induce sustained hypochlorhydria. A profound and sustained reduction of histamine response occurred in only 1 dog. Although endoscopic and histologic evidence of repeated and severe mucosal damage was observed, recovery occurred quickly. The recovery was quicker and more complete with heating than with freezing. The gastric mucosa of the dog has remarkable ability to recover from repeated, severe thermal injury.
