Ecological and morphological observations onHydrobius niger (Zschach, 1788) andHydrobius fuscipes (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae)

Summary

During a hydrobiological investigation in the polder area ‘Midden-Delfland’ (Province of Zuid-Holland), ecological parameters of the habitat ofHydrobius niger (Zschach, 1788) andHydrobius fuscipes (Linnaeus, 1758) were gathered at localities of similar morphogenesis. Out of 50 localities,H.niger was found at 5 andH.fuscipes at 8 localities.

Morphological differences between the two species were summarized and illustrated (Figs. 1 and 2).

By comparing the ecological parameters of the localities ofH.niger andH.fuscipes, it has been found that the salinity of the water (280 and 167 mg.l−1Cl respectively), the number of species of macrophytes (22 and 16 species, respectively) and the percentage covering of emergent macrophytes (5% and 10%, respectively) differ significantly. Earlier obtained characteristics of the habitat of the two species seem to correspond to these results.

The two species were not found simultaneously, nor were they reported as such in the cited references.
