Summary
When measuring the upper winds over the northwestern headland of Iceland, over the Greenland Sea on board the survey ship “Meteor”, and over Greenland itself (observations which were carried out in 1926 and the following years under the sponsorship of the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft) northerly upper air gales lasting several days were often ascertained between 5 and 15 km. These upper air gales were supposed to be connected with the regeneration of cyclones over the North Atlantic. It was then impossible to elucidate their life history for lack of synoptic observations, but now this may perhaps be done by analogy with the upper air gales called “jet stream” which have been ascertained over the U. S. by aid of their numerous radiosonde stations. As in the free atmosphere proportionality between pressure gradient and wind velocity exists only in case of acceleration, but not in case of retardation of fast wandering big “air parcels” (due to their mass inertia), the problem of the life history of such fast “air parcels” and their relation to the distribution of pressure is raised.
