Summary

In the present study we examine the daily and annual variation of the concentration of positive and negative large ions in the air above Athens (ϑ = 37°58′N, λ = 23°43′E,h = 107 m), for the 9-year period 1969–1977. The diurnal variation of the large ion concentration follows a double oscillation. Their annual variation is parallel to that of smoke, presenting a maximum in winter and a minimum in summer. A Fourier analysis of their diurnal variation was also made. In addition we have examined the influence of air temperature and relative humidity on the concentration of positive and negative largeions.
