Summary
To prepare 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid (picolinic acid) and 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid (nicotinic acid), the vapour phase oxidation of a corresponding alkylpyridine is used. In order to analyse all the products of oxidation, a method with separate product condensation and formation of trimethylsilyl derivatives of the acids was developed. It has worked well during several years of use and is described in detail. Relative standard deviation for the analysis of 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid was 3.2%.
