Summary
A new kind of sorbent, a colloidal organic system on a solid support which possesses many qualities essential for the analysis of highly polar compounds is proposed. The main advantage of such sorbents lies in the possibility of controlling their selectivity over wide limits by changing the composition of the binary phase, by changing the column temperature and by changing the surface area of the colloid particles. The influence of adsorption factors on the retention of solutes by these systems is examined, the chromatographic properties (conventional polarity, efficiency and thermal stability) of the stationary phases under review are evaluated and specific examples of their practical application in gas chromatography are given.
