Summary
A gas chromatographic method for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in waxy distillates, raffinates, and lubricating oils is described. The enrichment of the PAH is achieved in 3 steps, for the separation of the mixture of PAH high performance columns (2 mm×10 m glass, 5% OV 101 on GasChrom Q) are used. The evaluation is carried out by comparison of the areas of the FID-signals with added internal standard benzo(b)chrysene or picene. In the range of benzo(a)-pyrene, the noise level corresponds to 2 ng BaP, and therefore the minimum detectable amount would be about 6 nanograms. In 17 samples of waxy distillates and motor oils about 40 peaks are detectable and are characterised by mass spectrometry. Fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo(a)fluorene, benzo(b)fluorene, benzo(b)naphtho (2,1-d)thiophene, benzo(ghi)fluoranthene, benzo(a)anthracene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(e)pyrene, benzo(a)pyrene, and perylene are identified by comparison of the retention time and mass spectrometry with pure compounds. The variation coefficient of the method in the case of 7 PAH ranges between 2.9 to 7.5% (1 to 100 ppm).
