Summary
The well-known advantages of the direct coupling of capillary columns to a mass spectrometer can be exploited only if the performance of the separation unit and the detector unit are fully maintained even after their combination. Some of the requirements to be met in order to achieve this are discussed: on the one hand, the selection of gas chromatographic conditions suitable for solving the analytical problem should not be restricted by the connection of the chromatograph to the mass spectrometer. On the other hand, the characteristics of separation and concentration of substances existing at the end of the column must be indicated continuously in the gas chromatogram during the gc/ms-analysis without loss of information and with sufficient sensitivity. Comparison of chromatograms recorded in different ways on the coupling system shows that these requirements are best fulfilled by connecting an FID in parallel with the mass spectrometer. The splitting device used at the outlet of the capillary column can be made in such a way that the split ratio, adjustable to a particular value, remains constant even if gas flow conditions in the column are changing.
