Summary

The early period of the development of gas chromatography in the U.S.S.R. up to 1955 is discussed. The period included the pioneering research of Shilov in the field of adsorption dynamics, Dubinin and coworkers in frontal chroamtography, Zhukhovitskii and Turkel'taub in thermochromatography and Vyakhirev and coworkers in volumetric detection methods.

Additional information

This article is dedicated to ProfessorA. A. Zhukhovitskii on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Editor's Note In the list of references as well as in the text of Dr.Vigdergauz paper we were careful in the proper transliteration of the Russian names written originally in Cyrillic. In this we followed the rules used byChemical Abstracts which are practically identical to the rules of Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary (G. & C. Merriam Co., Publishers, Springfield, Mass., USA). This transliteration is sometimes different than those used in other publications particularly in a language other than English: for example, in German, the nameZhukhovitskii is often transliterated asShuchowizki. The only exception where these rules were not followed is the name ofTswett where we accepted the well-known usage actually utilized by himself in his non-Russian publications. The proper spelling of his name would beTsvet.
