Structural effects and retention in reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography of 2-benzoylbenzoic acid derivatives

Summary

The retention behaviour of twenty derivatives of 2-benzoylbenzoic acid was investigated in reversed-phase (RP) systems consisting of octadecyl silica (LiChrosorb RP-18) as the column packing material eluted with buffer-methanol mixtures containing low concentrations of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (cetrimide).

Owing to the linear relationships between logk′ and % cetrimide or % methanol in the mobile phase, the effects of the individual substituents on retention were quantified by using the group contribution parameter Δ logk′. Correlation between HPLC and HPTLC data for the same RP systems was analysed.
