Summary
Analysis conditions were established for the gas chromatographic analysis of a reaction mixture consisting of methanol, water, formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. The separation took place on a Porapak column at temperatures above 100 °C. The by-products present in formaldehyde solutions were investigated; they were identified as methanol, methylal, bis- and tris-oxymethylene dimethyl ethers, and dimethyl ether, using different methods of identification. In addition we reported on the influence of column temperatures below 100 °C on formaldehyde analysis. In chromatograms obtained during the analysis of methanolic formaldehyde on Porapak we observed an asymmetrical peak which is explained by a formation and decomposition equilibrium of formaldehyde-methyl-semiacetal that cannot be detected by preparative methods.
