Behaviour of phenols in normal and reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography

Summary

Thin-layer chromatographic systems have been established for the separation of phenol mixtures on silica stationary phases (RP-8 and RP-18) with the following mixed eluents: chloroform-isopropanol (49+1.5 v/v); benzene-methanol (8+1 v/v); benzene-isopropanol (50+4 v/v); methanol-water (2+1 v/v), and methanol-0.2M NaOH (2+1 v/v).

The relationship between the RM values of the examined compounds on RP-2, RP-8 and RP-18 and the composition of the mobile phase has been determined as the RM=f (% vol. MeOH) function. The effect of hydrophobicity and the chemical structure of the phenols and their retention times was also demonstrated.
