Summary

Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is a factor which is important for plant growth and development. Equally important is its quantification in order to determine evapotranspiration and dry matter production of field crops. As such information about PAR is lacking, a simple correlation between PAR and light intensity (LI) for New Delhi (28°35′N) was worked out for different seasons and for various times of the day. Significantly high positive correlations exist between PAR and LI (r ranging between 0.84 to 1.00) during monsoon season (July–September). Also during summer period (May–June) there was significant positive correlation between them (r = 0.84). The regression equation may be quite useful for evaluating PAR in different periods using LI data.
