Summary
The applicability of a commercial evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) in polymer analysis was studied in isocratic and gradient elution. The specific response is independent of the relative molecular masses of polystyrenes and of the chemical composition of styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers but is a function of eluent composition and of the air pressure used for nebulization. It also depends on linear velocity of the eluent consequently the ELSD is not a mass sensitive detector. A limiting factor is the dependence of the specific response on sample size, especially in the chromatographically important range below 30 μg. On the other hand, it is the only detector applicable to qualitative polymer analysis in gradient elution for polymers without chromophores or with non-transparent eluents.
