Some observations on the hydrochloric acid etching of soda-lime glass in the preparation of capillary columns for gas chromatography

Summary

A study was made of the factors which influence the quality of the surface roughening of soda-lime glass capillaries by means of gaseous HCl etching. For the deposition of a dense layer of submicron NaCl particles, proper conditions have to be chosen. However, such a layer may deteriorate rapidly because of recrystallisation of the initially formed NaCl layer into larger aggregates. This has been studied with the aid of scanning electron microscopy, and a procedure to prevent recrystallisation and to improve the performance of the coated capillary column is given. The gas chromatography of aqueous samples on these columns seems to have little effect on their subsequent performance.
