Summary

A mathematical description is presented for the profiles of wind speed and air temperature measured above a short grass vegetation surrounded by irregular and inhomogeneous terrain. This “ln-profile” [u=A(lnz)B and Θ=C+D(lnz)E] is applicable both under stable and unstable conditions. The validity, under these conditions, of the Swinbank and Keyps-theories for the turbulent transfer of heat and momentum is tested with a comparison of calculated friction velocities. Although the relationships found are not as well-defined as under more homogeneous conditions, the variations found in the transfer parameters are dependent on stability more than on the homogeneity of the surrounding area.
