Summary
The validity of a number of formulae for the calculation of long wave radiation from a cloudless atmosphere have been examined on the basis of two years of observation performed by us at Deelen aerodrome (05° 53′ E, 52° 04′ N). The formulae examined are those of Brunt and Swinbank and six modifications of these. Of these eight formulae that of Brunt appeared to give the best fit to our observations.
Because the parameters in the formulae will depend on the air mass properties (temperature, humidity, pollution) the data were grouped as to month and to wind direction. Statistically no preference for one of these groupings could be proved.
