Summary
Continuous, simultaneous measurements of the specific radioactivity from fission products in air and precipitation are being made since December, 1963, at three sites in the Bavarian Alps (Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 730 m, Wank summit, 1780 m, and Zugspitze peak, 2966 m a. s. l.); these stations are closely spaced in the horizontal and roughly equidistant in the vertical. From the data thus acquired, the specific capture cross-sectionq (m2/litre) and the fractionf of the activity obtained from precipitation in a layer of given thickness are computed. The relative decrementf′ of the abundance of fission products in air is also determined, and compared withf. Thus, quantitative characteristics for the washout process are gained, and are classified with reference to the type of precipitation (rain, snow, showers, steady etc.). Means and frequency distribution statistics are derived from the data and compared with theoretical results and — as far as these are known — also with observational results reported by others. Furthermore, the influence of several meteorological parameters was studied. Cable car soundings were processed to obtain a quantitative estimate of the errors induced by evaporation of falling precipitation under various conditions. Possible explanations for the very frequently reported decrease in specific precipitation activity within the melting zone are weighted. By extrapolation, the height at which precipitation radioactivity would vanish if subject to linear attenuation is determined. Comparing the result of the computations with the assumed height of the cloud tops, we find that the amount of activity incorporated in falling precipitation is relatively small against the fallout capture by the washout process.
