Summary

The precipitable water (PW) above Vienna is investigated statistically and also with regard to a possible use for prognostic purposes using the humidity observations of the radiosondes from 1968 to 1970. For this purpose the vertical distribution of the humidity in layers of 50 mb height each, the variation ofPW in time, and the relations to types of weather situations and to some meteorological parameters are discussed. Investigations of single weather situations with regard to the fields of humidity, temperature and wind show characteristic relations between 12hourly localPW variations and 12hourly precipitation totals, from which, especially with precipitation lasting over several halfdays, indications can be derived whether the main amount of precipitation has already fallen or not.
