Summary
From an extensive observational material on the vertical ozone distribution over Arosa, obtained by the Umkehr method, monthly means are computed and reduced statistically to the 30 years observation series of the total amount existing for this place.
Over longer periods a clear connection between ozone content in the stratosphere and the weather development in the troposphere is found. In winter there is a quite high correlation between total ozone of the atmosphere and the ozone content of the lower stratosphere. The pronounced correlation between ozone concentration and temperature reaches its maximum also in this season and at these heights; in January it is extended to the middle stratosphere. The strong negative correlation between tropopause height and ozone concentration is decreasing rapidly with inereasing height in the stratosphere. It is found that there are two types of stratospheric disturbances, one clearly connected with tropospheric events, the other—at least at that moment—confined to the stratosphere.
On the basis of these results and taking into account photochemical influences, a tentative scheme of the yearly ozone circulation in the atmosphere is postulated.
