Summary
Difficulties in applyingPrandtls mixing length theory to the problem of maritime evaporation and of wind friction at the surface of the ocean are discussed. They are due, on the one hand, to the surface form of the ocean being dependent on the wind and on the other hand to the prevailing non-adiabatic temperature distribution for whichPrandtls equations and all those derived from them are not valid. The influence of the vertical temperature distribution on the evaporation coefficient is shown and the errors are indicated likely to arise if the hydrodynamic character of the surface of the ocean is studied without taking account of the temperature distribution. On the basis of 164 vertical profiles of the water vapor distribution above the ocean (Baltic Sea, Atlantic, Pacific) taken from publications the dependence of the evaporation coefficient on wind velocity and vertical temperature distribution is examined. Furthermore adiabatic values of the evaporation coefficient are deduced. These are shown to increase with the wind velocity from values corresponding to a hydrodynamically smooth boundary surface in case of small wind velocities to such occurring over a rough surface the roughness parameter of which is growing with the wind velocity. No critical wind velocity can be observed; the transition to greater roughness seems to be steady. Results found by other authors are discussed.
Discussion de résultats d'autres auteurs.
