Summary
The US-Weather Bureau class A-pan has been used for measuring the potential evaporation at 4 stations in Austria since 1957.
The phenomenon of the evaporation of the pan, its specific features and the sources of error are described: the influence of the surroundings is important, especially the pattern of the local skyline. On the other hand the difference between the normal placement and the sunken placement influences only the amplitude of the surface temperature of the water in the pan.
The mean values, the standard deviation, the interdiurnal variability and the relative frequency of the daily values of the evaporation are communicated. Generally the evaporation rate shows a decrease with increasing sea level: Kanzelhöhe (1500 m): 63% of the evaporation at the Marchfeld: Obersiebenbrunn (150 m), but the influence of the placements sometimes causes important deviations; Vienna (202 m): 77% of the evaporation at Obersiebenbrunn. The annual variation of the potential evaporation is characterised by a maximum in early summer and the lowest value at the end of the vegetation period. The potential evaporation seems to be a useful criterion for the hydrometeorological interpretation of the types of the general meteorological situation.
A discussion is added which of 5 evaporation formulas would be the best for the calculation of the amounts of the potential evaporation.
