Precipitation of stratospheric tracers and cyclogenesis in the Western Mediterranean

Summary

The phenomenological theory of “tropopause folding” as associated with the injection of stratospheric tracers into the troposphere during intense cyclogenesis is reexamined in connection with cyclone formation in the Western Mediterranean area. Ozone and radioactivity ground measurements are critically analysed in this respect. Correlation between concentration in the lower troposphere of stratospheric tracers and intense cyclogenesis is shown not to be appreciable beyond 5% cohenrence confidence level, even if visual inspection of both time records and weather maps gives the opposite impression.
