Summary
The relationship of monthly Sr90 deposition in middle latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere to precipitation has been analyzed, showing that the deposition increases approximately as the square root of precipitation. Evidence is presented that the seasonal variation of deposition at a given station is modified by the annual variation of rainfall. Based on this evidence, the reported depositions were corrected for rainfall, and the resulting normalized depositions were used to analyze the annual cycle and long-term decrease of deposition after testing of nuclear weapons. The results indicate that the amplitude of the annual variation of deposition in the Southern Hemisphere is similar to that in the Northern Hemisphere, but of somewhat smaller amplitude. The rate of decrease of deposition, and the inferred rate of depletion of the stratospheric reservoir in the absence of fresh injections, are shown to correspond to a “half-life” of about ten months, in agreement with the results of studies of the rate of decrease of the stratospheric burden.
