Some theoretical considerations with regard to the homogeneity-criteria of Helmert and Abbe

Summary

Since most books on statistical methods in climatology do not deal with the mathematical foundation of the well-known homogeneity criteria ofHelmert and ofAbbe, it seemed useful to derive both tests as exactly as possible, starting from some well described null-hypothesed and to comment on the definition of relative homogeneity given byHelmert andAbbe. The author shows that especially the first test is a very weak one, that persistence and trend should be absent in both simultaneous series and that both criteria are not fully based on those assumptions which correspond with the definition of relative homogeneity mentioned byHelmert andAbbe.

Moreover, a new definition is suggested by the author which corresponds better with practice. In his opinion both criteria should be avoided in homogeneity investigations. Further the author disapproved of the application of several tests to the same statistical problem because in general the results cannot be compared since the null-hypotheses on which the tests have been grounded differ more or less which difference influences the statistical results in an often nearly incalculable way.

Zusammenfassung

Da die meisten Lehrbücher mit Bezug auf die Anwendung statistischer Methoden in der Klimatologie keine mathematische Begründung der wohlbekannten Homogenitäts-Kriterien vonHelmert und vonAbbe geben, hat Verfasser es für notwendig gehalten, die beiden tests auf Grund einiger wohl umschriebenen Null-Hypothesen so exakt wie möglich abzuleiten und dabei die vonHelmert undAbbe formulierte Definition relativer Homogenität zu kommentieren. Es wird gezeigt, daß speziell der erste Test sehr schwach ist, daß beide Kriterien ein Fehlen von Persistenz und Trend bedingen und daß die Bezügliche Homogenitäts-Definition eigentlich nicht in genauer Übereinstimmung ist mit dem, was man in der Praxis meistens darunter versteht. Verfasser schlägt eine bessere Definition vor. Beide Kriterien sollten in Homogenitäts-Untersuchungen vermieden werden. Es muß davon abgeraten werden, mehrere Tests in einem und demselben statistischen Problem anzuwenden. Es ist im allgemeinen sehr schwer, die Ergebnisse zu vergleichen, weil die Tests meistens auf mehr oder weniger verschiedenen Voraussetzungen beruhen.

Puisque la plupart des livres sur l'application des méthodes statistiques à la climatologie ne donnent pas une fondation mathématique des critères bien connus deHelmert et deAbbe sur l'homogénéité relative, l'auteur a jugé bon de dériver ces critères ici aussi exactement que possible, en partant d'hypothèses-zero bien décrites, et de commenter la définition de l'homogénéité relative donnée parHelmert et parAbbe. L'auteur montre que spécialement le premier critère est faible, que les deux critères conditionnent une absence complète de persistence ou de «trend» dans les deux séries et que la définition de l'homogénéité ne s'accorde pas avec ce qu'on entend généralement par cette idée en pratique. Une autre définition est suggérée qui correspond mieux à la pratique. Finalement l'auteur déconseille d'appliquer différents tests statistiques simultanément à un même problème. En général, une comparaison entre les résultats obtenus paraît très difficile puisque les hypothèses sur lesquelles les tests sont basés, sont plus ou moins différentes.
