Summary
The intestinal helminths, especially the tapeworms of 3,603 red foxes from Southwest Germany are discussed in relation to their epidemiology and to findings of other European authors. Cestodes, the intermediate hosts of which are small rodents, were the most common, those with larvae in bigger animals were rare or lacking. Helminths with water origins were rare, too, according to the structure of the investigation area. Seasonal dynamics were found to occur in the cestodeMesocestoides leptothylacus and in the nematodesToxocara canis andUncinaria stenocephala. The tapeworms found in 74 badgers, 47 stone-martens, and 295 cats are recorded. It is stressed that in the Federal Republic of Germany investigations on parasites of free-living carnivores have been done far too seldom or not at all and that lot of questions are still to be answered.
