Summary
The jackal was put under protective status in Bulgaria in 1962. This resulted in the spread of the jackal throughout the country by 1985. The animal turned into a pest for hunting and for domesticated animals. Hence, hunting quotas were introduced in the areas of Strandza and in the eastern part of Stara Planina, where jackals were most abundant. This, however, had no effects upon the numbers and distribution of the jackals. The jackal is closely allied with humans for its way of life. It consumes garbage and preys on domestic animals. Various species of endoparasites were found to be harbored by jackals. They also contribute to the spread of rabies. Therefore, the hunting of jackals throughout Bulgaria was re-instituted in 1980.
