Summary
This investigation was conducted on the basis of data on the numbers of wild boar and the utilization of their populations in Europe. The western and central European countries still conform to the theoretical models for the utilization of populations developed in the 1960's and 1970's. The increase in the numbers of wild boar in these countries equals 100–140% of the spring populations. The differences between the theoretically calculated and the actually measured values for the body weights of the investigated specimens range between 18.3% in the Caucasus, and 45.8% in the Bel. Pusta. In Germany no differences were observed, and in France the differences were very small. Large discrepancies occur where the hunting model is not observed and there is a great increase in population. This is, for example, the case in Lithuania (40.1%) and Bel. Pusta (45.8%).
The investigation shows that in those regions of western and central Europe where the theoretical model is followed, the populations demonstrate a higher growth rate. The countries of eastern Europe show a lower growth rate and lower productivity in conjunction with the nonobservance of the theoretical model.
