Summary
Fluxes of the various components of the energy balance are measured over Prairie grass. Data collected on three clear days are used to test some of the conclusions on heating coefficient and flux relationship reached by Monteith and Szeicz [12, 13[, Stanhill et al. [18], and Idso et al. [8].
Common agreement with general trends observed by these investigators is shown, but questions are raised as to the mathematical validity of the method used for deriving the coefficient. No linear trend is observed between net radiation and longwave radiation loss. Regression of net radiation on solar radiation during summer of 1970 is carried out using various groupings of data. The results show that much of the criticism of Davies [2] is unfortunate. The precision with which estimates of net radiation can be made from different groupings on the basis of information on solar radiation remains almost the same, in spite of variations in regression coefficient. The conclusion is reached that data grouping should be carried out with ‘use’ in mind and that the debate as to what is an appropriate value of the regression slope is not a very useful exercise.
