Summary
Dealing with the observations from ships in the Antarctic Ocean a working method is developed which takes into account the peculiarities of the data and of the region. The observations are summed up in squares of 4 degrees latitude by 20 degrees longitude to give a north-south cross section, south of Africa, which can serve as a basis for the discussion of the climatic features in this oceanic region. The characteristics of this particular area are examined and the existence of an almost isothermal zone pointed out. The likely position and movement of the zones of convergence and of the subantarctic trough are dealt with. Where possible, the variations between different years are illustrated by means of temperature and wind data. Finally, a general view of the course of weather development during the summer season is attempted by means of three day means.
