Summary
An infrared radiation thermometer looking vertically downward at plant covered areas measures an integral temperature value of the total vegetation layer. Often the temperature of the upper parts of the plants may be of more interest. This value may be closely approximated by directing the radiometer inclined at an angle of about 30° to 45° to the horizontal.
Because of the difficulties of inclined measurements the magnitude of the differences between vertical and inclined measurements was investigated. It was found to vary from a few tenths of a degree to more than three degrees depending on the height of the vegetation layer, the sun's elevation and other minor factors.
