Summary
The synchronization method was used for a global inspection of the relation between the sunspot “cycle” and the annual means of temperature and precipitation totals of 92 stations, which were distributed over a large part of the earth. Taken globally, a tendency could be found that the temperature “cycle” lags up to a quarter of the full cycle behind the sunspots, whereas the precipitation totals advance the sunspots also up to a quarter of the full cycle. The single stations, however, show wide deviations from this average relation.
The existence of other periods and the form of the stochastic processes underlying the series of annual data of temperature and precipitation was investigated by means of the variance spectra. Though most of the spectra may be approximated by a first-order autogressive model there is a number of peaks to be found in the spectra. The temperature data show peaks near periods of 6 years, between 9 and 15 years and with very long periods. The precipitation totals have spectral peaks mostly with 6 years and with very long periods. The geographical distribution of the various shapes of the spectra is discussed.
