Observations on the output of parasite eggs and larvae by Pyrenean Chamois (Rupicapra p. pyrenaica, Bonaparte, 1845)

Summary

We examined throughout a year the faecal output of strongyle eggs and protostrongylid lungworm larvae in the Pyrenean chamois(Rupicapra pyrenaica pyrenaica). The seasonal pattern of egg and larval counts and the species involved were similar to other chamois populations of the Pyrenees and only the presence of strongylidMarshallagia and the dominance of the lungwormMuellerius appeared to be unique to the surveyed population.Fasciola hepatica was also found.

Zusammenfassung

Überprüft wurde im Verlauf eines Jahres die Abgabe von Strongylideneiern und Lungenwurmlarven im Kot der Gemse (Tabelle 1). Die jahreszeitlichen Muster der Eier und Larvenmengen waren jenen anderer Gemspopulationen in den Pyrenäen vergleichbar (Tabelle 2). Lediglich der StrongylideMarshallagia und das Vorherrschen des LungenwurmsMuellerius scheinen allein in der untersuchten Population vorhanden zu sein.Fasciola hepatica wurde nachgewiesen.

Résumé

On vérifie la production, au niveau fécal et tout au long d'une année, d'œufs de strongles et de larves de strongles pulmonaires chez l'Isard (Fig. 1). Le patron saisonnier de production d'œufs et de larves est comparable à celui de toutes les autres populations du Chamois pyrénéen (Tab. 2). Seules l'occurence du strongle Marshallagia et la dominance du ver pulmonaire Muellerius apparaissent uniques dans la population étudiée. La présence de Fasciola hepatica a également été vérifiée.
