Summary
The digestive system of the Tetraonides can be looked on as a highly specialised construction designed to cope with a plant diet occasionally containing crude fibre and which is of only moderate nutritional value. Special separation mechanisms in the muscle stomach, small intestine and on the ileum-caecumcolon canal ensure that only highly digestible particles reach the caecum. Here, as a result of bacterial fermentation, there is a further utilisation of substances which cannot be broken up in the gut. The volatile fatty acids (acetate, propionate, butyrate) thereby released can be used by the Tetraonides as a source of energy. The backward transport of urine into the caeca and the bacterial hydrolysis of uric acid and urea taking place there are possibly the first steps in a cycle, which serves to save nitrogen. Discoveries from microbiological and microanatomical studies confirm the function principle of the digestive system.
