Summary
The parapineal organ ofLampetra planeri, a dorsal diencephalic vesicular evagination, is constituted by two epithelia: a dorsal inverted “retina” and a ventral direct one, in which four cell types are identified: sensory cells, ganglion cells, ependymal cells and cells containing residual bodies.
A cytophysiological study points out the existence of:
-
1.
Few cone-like photoreceptor cells showing an outer segment composed of a relatively low number of discs; a majority of rudimentary photoreceptors and sensory cells having irregular outer segments which may be characteristic of different stages of regression.
-
2.
Protein synthesis (well-developed granular endoplasmic reticulum and free ribosomes), secretory activity (formation of dense-core vesicles — mean diameter 900 Å — within the Golgi area, migrating to the endfeet of the basal processus), and excretion in the myoid of sensory type cells, and into synaptic and asynaptic pedicles of sensory type cells. From the endings of these pedicles the secretory products are probably released.
-
3.
Regression of the synaptic connections and of the ganglion cells, presumably conducting the photic stimuli to the left habenular ganglion.
On the ground of electron microscopic comparative studies, it can be concluded that the parapineal organ ofLampetra planeri maintains a residual photoreceptive potential and that it also plays a neuroendocrine role (in agreement withEddy andStrahan, 1968).
New investigations are undertaken to determinate the nature of the active compounds and their possible effects on the pigmentary effector system (Young, 1935;Eddy andStrahan, 1968).
