Summary
An analysis of the mean longer-interval pressure differences between selected gridpoints along the southwest coast of Africa and the corresponding sea surface temperatures during the period 1951–1961 shows that stronger southeasterilies are associated with lower, and weaker southeasterlies with higher sea surface temperatures and, it may be assumed, a weaker and stronger Benguela Current and associated upwelling, respectively, in the quadrilateral: 22°–24° S, 12°–14° E and, similarly, with a weaker and stronger penetration of Agulhas Current water round the Cape into the South Atlantic in the quadrilateral: 32°–34° S, 16°–18° E, respectively.
It is further shown that in the first half of the period examined, the Benguela Current and Agulhas Current penetrations into the South Atlantic were weaker than in the second half of the period, the winds and temperatures reflecting a marked persistence in the large-scale air and water movements off southwest Africa.
