Abstract

Proctosigmoidoscopy was performed in our clinic on 6188 patients. Some examinations revealed gastrointestinal dysfunction, but the majority were routine examinations of patients above 40 years of age. The patients were divided according to ethnic origin—74.4% were North American, mostly Texas residents; and 16.8% were Mexican Gentiles, while 8.8% were Mexicans of Jewish ethnic background. These patients were scoped for routine proctoscopic indications, and to discover and extirpate polyps when found. It was also our intention to define any ethnic differences when they became apparent in our survey. The incidence of polyps was found to be higher in North Americans than in the Gentile and Jewish Mexican population.
