Protein metabolism, excretion, and detoxication functions of the liver after long-term treatment of liver cirrhosis with an anabolic substance

Summary

In 24 patients with compensated cirrhosis of the liver, a study was made of the effect on the protein metabolism and the excretion and detoxicating functions of the liver of treatment for 18 months with nandrolondecanoate (NDC). NDC initially had a significant anticatabolic effect on serum and urinary amino acid values. Only after an average of 9–12 months of treatment was a significant increase in intrahepatic albumin synthesis observed. The secretory function of the liver remained unchanged during NDC treatment, but the detoxicating function of the liver was improved, especially in terms of phenol metabolism.
