Conclusion
The release of endogenous gastrin through irrigation of isolated antrum pouches in dogs produced stimulation but no inhibition of acid secretion from Heidenhain pouches when a plateau of secretion had been established by the continuous intravenous injection of histamine. These experiments together with the secretory data on man secured from patients with Ellison-Zollinger tumors are interpreted as supporting the view that the inhibitory effect of the intravenous injection of exogenous gastrin represents an effect of marked overdosage of gastrin or rapidity of injection and that the normal response to the release of gastrin from the antrum during a meal is stimulation of secretion.
