Summary
The presence of a vanishing horizontal pressure gradient along the equator may admit of a current which ows its formation to the balanced action of Coriolis force and pressure field. Both, the “equatorial equilibrium current” and the geostrophic currents of higher latitudes allow the existence of actually stationary conditions only in the case of pure zonal movements. Some equivalent relations must be satisfied by the average transport of mass across a narrow vertical section, the upper and inferior limits of which being fixed by the condition that the action of the gradient force and of the deflecting force of the earth's rotation are in equilibrium with each other for this vertical section as a whole. Taking friction into account, the horizontal currents without acceleration are generally found to occur only along the equator, they are accompanied by a meridional convergence or divergence.
The results are in contradiction to the opinion that stationary fields of ocean currents are approximately free of acceleration and, hence, are geostrophic, especially so as the components of powers acting in the direction of the currents are scarcely taken into account when computing the velocities from the field of mass.
