Summary

Reports on fatal and nonfatal reactions to sulfobromophthalein (BSP) continue to appear in the medical literature, though infrequently. In this paper, a review of these reports and 3 additional cases are presented. To avoid BSP reaction, the allergic history of the patient and his response to previous administration of BSP should be obtained. BSP should be administered slowly to avoid thrombophlebitis, and other precautionary measures, before, during, and after BSP injection, should be observed.
