Der Küstenrückgang an der Insel Sylt

Zusammenfassung

Bei der gegenwärtigen Situation der Insel Sylt besitzen in der sonst üblichen Vielfalt der die Küstenabbrüche steuernden Faktoren jene Prozesse die Oberhand, die auf hydrographisch-meteorologischen Ursachen beruhen. Die vorliegende Arbeit greift dabei drei Schwerpunkte des Geschehens heraus:

• 1. Die Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Materiallängstransportes, die infolge des geknickten Küstenverlaufs (Nord- und Südschenkel der Insel bilden einen Winkel von 160°) ein Defizit in der Materialbilanz bewirken,

• 2. die Vorgänge am Nord- und Südende der Insel, die der seeseitigen Küste stetig einen Teil des Sandvorrats entziehen, und

• 3. die küstennormal verlaufenden Prozesse, wie sie an übersteilten Unterwasserhängen — vor Sylt zum Teil durch Menschenhand verursacht — vor sich gehen, und die in letzter Konsequenz den gegenwärtig geübten Küstenschutz zum Scheitern verurteilen.

Summary

Generally, the destruction of the coasts is the result of various factors the most of which show close interdependence. In its present stage of development, however, the great loss of the Island of Sylt appears to depend mainly on processes of hydrographical and meteorological origin.

The paper deals with three aspects which are essential for these ongoing processes:

• 1. The change of the direction of the shoreline (the northern and the southern part of the island form an angle of 160°) which causes a negative material balance within the longshore drift,

• 2. the processes which take place at the northern and the southern end of the island diminishing steadily the amount of the movable material off the sea-facing coast, and

• 3. the perpendicular movement of sandy material occurring on oversteepened coastal slopes which at last defeats all artificial protective efforts.

Résumé

En ce qui concerne la situation de l'île de Sylt, entre les nombreux facteurs déterminant habituellement la détérioration des côtes, les processus d'origine hydrographique et météorologique exercent une influence prépondérante.

Le présent ouvrage met en lumière trois points principaux:

• 1. Les lois du transfert des matériaux le long de la côte, qui mettent en déficit le bilan des matériaux par suite de la courbure de la côte (Les côtés Nord et Sud de l'île forment un angle de 160 degrés).

• 2. Les phénomènes constatés aux extrémités Nord et Sud de l'île, qui extraient de façon continue une partie de la réserve de sable du littoral, du côte de la mer.

• 3. L'écoulement de sable perpendiculairement à la côte sur une pente sour-marine très escarpée, qui, en consequence, vouera à l'insuccès les moyens de protection du littoral actuellement utilisés.
