Summary
1. Five-hundred consecutive cases of gastrectomy are reviewed, with a discussion of the indications for surgery.
2. The age of the patients and the patient complication rate are shown.
3. The complications are enumerated in regard to the wound, and intraabdominal and general complication for both elective and emergency subtotal gastrectomy.
4. The high incidence of complication in emergency operation is noted and discussed.
5. The mortality rate in elective cases is 2.2%, while the rate in emergency cases is 27.4%.
6. The cause of deaths and the importance of underlying disease in patients who are bleeding are discussed.
7. A comparative review of mortality rates for the private and for the service cases operated upon by the resident staff shows the rates to be similar.
