Does subtotal gastrectomy in bleeding peptic ulcer prevent recurrence of bleeding?

The American Journal of Digestive Diseases Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary and conclusion

A large series of patients originally hospitalized for acute hemorrhage from bleeding peptic ulcer were followed 3–8 years. Gross gastrointestinal hemorrhage recurred in approximately the same percentage of those who were never operated upon as in those who had subtotal gastrectomy to prevent the recurrence of bleeding. It is felt that these differences are of no special significance. The pertinent literature is in substantial agreement with the above findings.
